[ru] Загадки Сфинкса

Сфинкс, наверно, самая легендарная химера Древнего Египта и Греции. Если в Египте Сфинкс чаще всего лев с головой мужчины, и это благородный зверь, охраняющий вход в гробницы фараонов, то в мифах Греции это львица с головой женщины, обладающая невероятной физической силой и скверным характером.

Вот как описана Сфинкс в легенде «Эдип и загадка Сфинкса»: «Миновать [чудовище] было нельзя. А Сфинкс всякому прохожему задавала загадку. Не сумевшего дать правильный ответ Сфинкс сбрасывала со скалы на острые камни. Чудовище требовало все новых и новых жертв».

Что это, как не сама жизнь, задающая каждому сложные загадки и строго наказывающая тех, кто не может на них ответить?

[en] Riddles of the Sphinx

Sphinx is probably the best-known chimera of Ancient Egypt and Greece. But if Egyptian Sphinxes are mostly benevolent lions with male heads guarding the entrances to Pharaoh’s tombs, the Greek ones are lionesses with a female head, extremely strong but ill-tempered and malign.

You probably know the legend of Oedipus and the Riddle of Sphinx. The beastly creature guarded the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes, asking a riddle to travellers to allow them passage. Ordinary people couldn’t answer it – and were slain and devoured. Only Oedipus managed to answer correctly – and Sphinx had to throw herself from a high rock and died. An alternative version tells that she devoured herself.

Isn’t it a metaphor for our life creating more and more riddles and problems for every person and punishing us if we’re unable to find the right answer?
